The Flagship Hunt

South Dakota Mule Deer & Whitetail

Two species, one incredible piece of deer country. We hunt the mixed-grass prairie of the Northern Great Plains — glassing broken country for mule deer and working creek corridors and cover for whitetails. Spot-and-stalk hunting the way Western deer hunting should be done.

Why It's Different

There is something different about hunting deer on the Northern Great Plains. Big country, broken draws, endless grasslands, creek bottoms and miles of country where a mature buck can disappear in a matter of seconds.

At Virgin Creek Outfitters, our mule deer, whitetail and turkey hunts put you in the middle of that country. This is not a hunt built around sitting in one spot and hoping something happens — we hunt the country in front of us.

What We Chase

Western Big Game, Prairie Country

We also chase spring gobblers across the same ground — see the turkey hunts.

Glass & Stalk

Mule Deer

Broken prairie, draws and expansive country where glassing is our most important tool. We pick apart distant terrain for the mature bucks tucked into the folds.

Creeks & Cover

Whitetail

Creek and river corridors, ag edges and broken terrain create excellent travel and feeding habitat — be ready for a buck to appear out of a drainage at any moment.

Open Grasslands

Pronghorn

The classic Western speed goat — wide-open grasslands, long glassing sessions and a spot-and-stalk that tests your patience and your wind.

How We Hunt

Cover Ground. Glass Hard. Make the Stalk.

01

Cover the Country

Every hunt is dictated by conditions — weather, wind, pressure and deer movement. Rather than forcing one style, we move with the deer.

02

Glass It Down

Expect serious time behind optics. We break down draws, ridgelines, creek systems and feeding areas from strategic vantage points.

03

Close the Distance

Once we locate a buck worth pursuing, the hunt becomes about using terrain and wind to close the gap and put you in position.
